Violin virtuoso Aubree Oliverson joins PCO in opening the 2019-2020 concert season on Friday, November 8th with Tchaikovsky's famous violin concerto in D major, Op. 35
ALTADENA, Calif. - EntSun -- Violin virtuoso Aubree Oliverson joins us in opening the 2019-2020 concert season on Friday, November 8th with Tchaikovsky's famous violin concerto in D major, Op. 35. First premiered in 1881 in Vienna, this concerto is known around the world for its beautiful lyricism, Russian melodies, and virtuosic fireworks. Oliverson has been performing nationally and internationally since age 11; she currently studies with Robert Lipsett, the Jascha Heifetz Distinguished Violin Chair at Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles. She plays on a 1743 Sanctus Seraphin violin thanks to the generous loan of Dr. James Stewart.
A kindred spirit and close friend of Tchaikovsky's, Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg composed In Autumn Op. 11 in 1865. Also on the program is Percy Grainger's popular Irish Tune from County Derry. Originally written for woodwinds and brass in 1902 and published in 1918, Grainger's rich orchestra version is based on a very old Irish melody. Looking to the east of Ireland, audience members will also hear Malcolm Arnold's Four Scottish Dances, which was written in 1957 for the BBC Light Music Festival. It contains many comic elements, such as a 'tipsy' middle section, bassoon glissandi, and various unusual syncopated rhythms.
