Emmy Nominee Sepideh Moafi And Peabody Award Winner Aasif Mandvi To Receive Cultural Impact Awards
EntSun News/11102184
Silver Thread will recognize the two actors with its Cultural Impact Awards during its second annual Emmys Brunch September 12 in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES - EntSun -- Silver Thread, the entertainment initiative of Muslims for Progressive Values, will present its 2026 Cultural Impact Awards to Emmy-nominated actress Sepideh Moafi and Aasif Mandvi as part of the second annual Silver Thread Emmys Brunch on September 12 in Los Angeles.
The annual gathering brings together artists, writers, directors, producers, executives and cultural leaders to celebrate Muslim-rooted artists and storytellers whose work is expanding what audiences see on screen and shaping the larger cultural conversation.
Mandvi is being recognized for his longstanding impact on the representation of Muslims in American entertainment. Across a career spanning comedy, television, film and theater, Mandvi has consistently used storytelling to confront stereotypes, challenge assumptions and create space for Muslim characters to be funny, complicated, flawed and fully human.
From his groundbreaking work as a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where his incisive comedy frequently confronted Islamophobia and anti-Muslim prejudice, to creating and starring in Halal in the Family and his acclaimed dramatic work, including Evil, Mandvi has helped expand the possibilities for Muslim artists and stories in mainstream American entertainment.
"Aasif has been a friend and supporter of MPV's work for many years," said Ani Zonneveld, Co-Founder of Silver Thread and President of Muslims for Progressive Values. "In 2011, long before Silver Thread existed, he understood the need for progressive Muslim artists to tell our own stories, and he showed up for us. He wrote the foreword to our anthology and helped us launch it. So honoring him now feels very personal. He's not only an extraordinary artist, he's one of the original cultural innovators who helped change how Muslims are seen in American film and television."

Moafi will be honored at a defining moment in her career following her first Emmy nomination, for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her performance as Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi in The Pitt. The history making nomination marks the first time a Middle Eastern actress has been nominated in the category. The acclaimed drama leads all programs in Emmy nominations this year.
As Dr. Al-Hashimi, Moafi brings to primetime television a character still rarely seen in mainstream American entertainment: a complex Middle Eastern woman whose cultural identity informs her life without defining the entirety of her story. The Iranian-American actor portrays a mixed Iranian and Iraqi attending physician whose identity, humanitarian work and lived experience shape her worldview while never becoming the sole subject of the character.
The Pitt reflects the kind of storytelling Silver Thread wants to see more of: a Middle Eastern woman who is allowed to exist beyond the expectations so often placed on characters from Muslim-rooted cultures. Her culture is present, but she doesn't have to represent anyone but herself.
"I'm honestly stunned by Sepideh's work in The Pitt," said Anna Khaja, Co-Founder of Silver Thread. "As an actress, I watch her and think, how is she doing that? She's so specific and so completely alive. And then there's who she is outside of all that. She's spent years advocating for refugees and displaced people, raising funds and awareness, and working with the International Rescue Committee. I have enormous admiration for that. To me, that combination of artistry and action is incredibly powerful."
