Detroit's West Side Made Jazz History. KayeDinero Drops "Detroit WestSide" Into the Story

DETROIT - EntSun -- Detroit's West Side already has a soundtrack.

Now KayeDinero is adding another chapter.

At midnight, the Detroit-raised, Asheville-based producer releases "Detroit WestSide," an instrumental inspired by the neighborhoods, memories and experiences that shaped her before music became a public career.

And the timing lands on a particularly musical weekend back home.

Detroit Sound Conservancy is holding its annual Blue Bird BBQ on the city's West Side, near the historic Blue Bird Inn on Tireman Avenue. The community celebration includes live music and a look inside the ongoing restoration of one of Detroit's most important historic music spaces.

The connection is geographic and generational — not a formal collaboration.

BEFORE MOTOWN, THE WEST SIDE WAS ALREADY MAKING MUSIC

The Blue Bird Inn became an important home for modern jazz and Detroit's Black music community.

Its stage was connected to generations of musicians including Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Donald Byrd, Yusef Lateef and Tommy Flanagan. Detroit Sound Conservancy describes the venue as both a musical institution and a neighborhood gathering place.

For KayeDinero, that history makes the title "Detroit WestSide" mean more than geography.

"You grow up around history before you even understand that it's history," she said. "Detroit taught me how to build, compete, create and keep moving."

NORTH ROSEDALE PARK TO CASS TECH

"Detroit WestSide" draws from KayeDinero's own memories of North Rosedale Park, neighborhood block parties, playing sports and attending Cass Technical High School, where music was already part of her life through marching band.

The song follows "Key-Air-Rah," her birth-name-centered single, and leads into "Promote Yourself," the final release in the three-song sequence.

"The first record is who I am," she said. "Detroit WestSide is where I came from. Then Promote Yourself is what I learned."

DETROIT RAISED ME. ASHEVILLE CHANGED THE VIEW.

KayeDinero now creates from Asheville, where recent visuals have documented the Blue Ridge Mountains, French Broad River and Banks Ave after dark.

But Detroit remains part of the foundation.

"I can move somewhere beautiful and still know exactly what side of Detroit raised me," she said.
