Non-Profit Organization Uses Filmmaking to Empower Incarcerated Teens
LOS ANGELES - April 7, 2016 - EntSun -- The short film "Duendes Gone Bad" will premiere at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 11:30AM. The screening will take place at the Tateuchi Democracy Forum at the Japanese American National Museum in Downtown Los Angeles. The address of the screening is at 111 North Central Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90012. "Duendes Gone Bad" was made by the youth at Department of Youth Affairs (DYA) on Guam, and under the auspices of FYI Films (Films By Youth Inside).
"Duendes Gone Bad" is a short film about a drunk teen who runs over the dingha (twin) of a Duendes. Then the Duendes becomes bloated with vengeful anger. The following day the teen driver and his teammates find themselves bunkered down in a typhoon shelter when suddenly the Duendes launches a brutal attack. Assorted screams of terror and agony escalate, and the Duendes promises to continue the bloody rampage until the killer of his dingha confesses. "Duendes Gone Bad" was written, directed & performed by the youth at DYA. Some of the talent peforming with the youth are actors Reyna Calvo, Cory Caso and Julius Santos. FYI Films Creative Director/Founder Alex Munoz was the Supervising Director. FYI Films is a nonprofit organization that empowers young people affected by the juvenile justice system to improve their lives and become self-reliant. Through the art of cinema, media literacy and the creative story- telling process, youth find their voice and develop valuable skills that can be applied to all areas of their life. Program participants learn the basics of screenwriting and filmmaking from industry professionals and utilize those skills to create engaging short films expressive of their own lives.
