Universality Is A Result. Specificity Is The Work

Studio Valdivieso Says Stories Travel Farther When They Stop Trying to Belong to Everyone.
NEW YORK - EntSun -- Every storyteller wants the same thing.
Connection.
A story that crosses borders.
Generations.
Cultures.
Languages.
Something universal.
The temptation is to begin there.
Remove what feels too local.
Simplify what may require explanation.
Smooth the accent.
Broaden the character.
Make the family recognizable to everyone.
Make the world easier to enter.
And eventually something strange happens.
The story becomes accessible.
But nobody recognizes themselves inside it.
Because audiences rarely connect to generality.
They connect to detail.
A grandmother who refuses to throw away a plastic container.
A restaurant worker who knows exactly which guest needs attention before the guest asks.
A child learning a ritual without realizing he is inheriting a life.
A neighborhood that sounds different after midnight.
A family that loves one another but cannot say the thing everyone knows.
Specificity does not make a story smaller.
It gives the audience somewhere real to stand.

"Universality is usually something a story earns," said Studio Valdivieso founder Eric Valdivieso. "The writer's job is not to begin with everybody. It is to tell the truth about somebody so precisely that everybody recognizes something."
That distinction matters.
Millions of people know grief.
But nobody grieves through precisely the same rooms, memories, silences and unfinished conversations.
Millions know ambition.
Shame.
Jealousy.
Belonging.
Fear.
The emotion may be shared.
The path to it is not.
That path is the story.
Hollywood has often treated specificity as something that must be translated before audiences can understand it.
But audiences have repeatedly demonstrated the opposite.
They will enter unfamiliar worlds when the human behavior inside them feels true.
They do not need every detail explained.
They need to believe it belongs there.
Specificity creates texture.
Texture creates credibility.
Credibility creates identification.
And identification is what eventually becomes universal.
The goal should not be to make every audience member see themselves immediately.

The goal is to make one human experience so alive that eventually they cannot help seeing themselves in it.
Because the stories that travel farthest are often the ones that began somewhere very specific.
Universality is the echo. Specificity is the source.
