Cryolab Publishes Guidance on Frozen Sample Shipping and Dry Shipper Documentation

On vessel selection, the guidance explains that a vapour phase dry shipper holds liquid nitrogen absorbed into a porous inner matrix rather than as free liquid, allowing samples to travel in the vapour phase and the vessel to be inverted without spilling. Laboratories are advised to size a shipper on sample number and format together with journey length and a realistic delay allowance, and to account for the weight staff will have to handle. The guidance notes that straws, high security straws and vials occupy a canister differently, and that a capacity quoted at a vial count assumes a format many laboratories do not run.

Charging is identified as the point at which most failed cryogenic transports originate. The absorbent matrix must be fully saturated, which the guidance notes takes appreciably longer than many protocols allow, and the vessel must then be inverted and drained so that no free liquid remains. Laboratories are advised to weigh the unit before and after charging and to record both figures, since weight is the only practical measure of the cold mass in the vessel and the only check that identifies a matrix which has not taken a full charge.

On safety, the guidance cites BCGA Code of Practice 30, on the safe use of liquid nitrogen dewars, which records that asphyxia due to oxygen deficiency is often rapid with no prior warning to the victim, and advises that a freshly charged shipper should not share a lift with a person.

On documentation, the guidance addresses a conflation the company reports encountering across supplier literature. The shipper itself travels as not restricted under Special Provision A152 of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, provided the packaging cannot build pressure or release nitrogen in any orientation and the air waybill carries the words not restricted together with the special provision number. Packing Instruction 650 of the same regulations governs the biological samples inside where those are classified as UN 3373 Category B, and applies to the samples rather than to the nitrogen.
