Governor Newsom proclaims Latino Heritage Month
SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today issued a proclamation declaring September 15, 2026, to October 15, 2026, as "Latino Heritage Month" in the State of California.
The text of the proclamation and a copy can be found below in both English and Spanish:
PROCLAMATION
The Latino experience in California has never been one story. It is millions of stories carried across generations — families who have lived here for centuries, families who planted new roots here, and families still working toward the promise of a better future. During Latino Heritage Month, we honor this extraordinary breadth of experience and celebrate a community inseparable from the life and identity of our state.
Latino communities have shaped California since before it became a state. Their influence lives in the places we call home, the languages we speak, the traditions we carry, and the values that bind our communities together. For generations, Latino families have helped build the California we know while preserving the histories and cultures that make our state unlike anywhere else in the world.
Latinos are a driving force behind the powerhouse that is California. Latino-owned businesses, both small and large, create jobs, strengthen neighborhoods, and open doors of opportunity for the next generation. Innovators, civil rights leaders, artists, farmworkers, professionals, public servants, parents — each represents an essential part of California.
California has produced some of the most remarkable Latino voices of our time: artists who have transformed how we see the world, writers who have expanded whose stories are told, and leaders who have changed the course of our state and nation.
Yet even communities with roots this deep continue to face xenophobia, harmful stereotypes, and rhetoric that attempts to cast its members as outsiders. Honoring Latino heritage means confronting these forces and standing against attempts to diminish the community's dignity, belonging, or contributions.
Hate does not define California, nor will it determine who belongs here. California will continue to welcome people with open arms and invest in opportunities in education, childcare, and before- and after-school programs so every family, and every person, has the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
This Latino Heritage Month, we celebrate the many stories, cultures, and traditions that make up California's Latino community. We honor those who came before us, recognize those shaping our state today, and look proudly toward the generations still to come.
NOW THEREFORE I, GAVIN NEWSOM, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim September 15 to October 15, 2026, as "Latino Heritage Month."
