Stepping Into a Legacy: Willie Brake Inducted Into the Historic Rotary Club of Detroit
EntSun News/11101488
A Detroit entrepreneur and disability advocate joins one of the world's oldest Rotary clubs — welcomed by the sponsor who saw his heart for service.
DETROIT - EntSun -- For Willie Brake, service has never been an obligation. It has been the thread running through his whole life. On August 12, 2026, that lifelong commitment found a new home when Brake was formally inducted as the newest member of the Rotary Club of Detroit — one of the oldest and most storied Rotary clubs in the world.
Chartered in 1910 as Club No. 16 in Rotary's global network, the Rotary Club of Detroit has served the city and its people for more than a century, guided by the motto that has inspired generations of Rotarians: "Service Above Self." For Brake, those three words felt less like a new creed than a homecoming.
"When I first read them, I didn't feel like I was learning something new. I felt like I was coming home," Brake said. "I'm not simply joining a club. I'm stepping into a legacy."
It is a legacy Brake has spent a lifetime preparing to join. A Detroit technology entrepreneur at All About Technology and tireless volunteer, he has mentored aspiring business owners through Detroit's Build Institute and Launch Detroit, helped young Detroiters earn their very first work experience, and given his time wherever the need was greatest. "I've had the privilege of watching someone turn a fragile idea into a business that feeds a family," he said.

"I've seen what happens to a young person the moment someone finally believes in them," Brake said. "I was raised to believe that we are measured not by what we keep, but by what we give."
Brake was sponsored for membership by Margaret Williamson, a past president of the club and a longtime Rotarian who, he says, "saw something in me and opened this door." At his induction, he was welcomed by Rotary Club of Detroit President Monica Davie and District Governor-Elect Therese Maggioncalda, who joined Brake and Williamson in marking the occasion.
"To be welcomed into a family that has served this city for more than a century is a profound honor," Brake said. "I don't come to this club to be served. I come to serve."
The Rotary Club of Detroit is part of Rotary International, a global network of business and community leaders who unite to create lasting change at home and around the world — through service projects, youth programs, scholarships, and causes ranging from literacy to clean water. New members, club leaders say, are the lifeblood of that century-old mission.
Brake says he is ready to get to work — to roll up his sleeves, build relationships, and serve alongside people who lead with their hearts. "Everything good in my life traces back to someone who decided to serve — a neighbor, a mentor, sometimes a stranger," he said. "Joining Rotary is my way of paying that forward."

And then, with the warmth his friends know well, the self-described Christmas baby offered his new Rotary family one more promise: "I'm still the gift that keeps on giving."
