Hispaniola Cigars Distributor Honors the Taino and the Native Nations of the Americas
EntSun News/11105118
A new story on Indigenous Peoples' Day looks at the Taino of Hispaniola and the Native nations of the United States, then and now.
VERO BEACH, Fla. - EntSun -- VERO BEACH, Fla.,
- Hispaniola Cigars Distributor has published a new story for Indigenous Peoples' Day, "Honoring the First Peoples: The Taino and the Native Nations of the Americas." The story is free to read on the company's website and is not about a product. It is about the people who were here first.
Long before Columbus arrived, the Taino lived across Hispaniola, the island that today holds Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and on other Caribbean islands. They farmed, fished, built communities and grew tobacco, which they used in ceremony. The story describes their daily life, their food and their beliefs, and how tobacco first met the wider world through them.
The story also looks at what happened next, and at what did not disappear. Genetic studies have found Indigenous ancestry that lives on in Caribbean families today, including about 61 percent maternal Indigenous ancestry in Puerto Rico and roughly 15 to 18 percent in the Dominican Republic. For Haiti, no published study gives a Taino percentage. The story explains why, and why it is still reasonable to believe some of that heritage lives on, since the Taino lived across the whole island.

The second half turns to the United States, where there are 574 federally recognized Native nations. It covers the Choctaw and the Trail of Tears, how a Native nation governs itself, Native-owned businesses and tribal colleges, and the ways Native peoples are building today while some communities still face real hardship. It ends with practical ways readers can honor Native peoples, and lists its sources.
The story is about the Taino and the Native nations, not about the company. Hispaniola Cigars Distributor shares only the roots of Hispaniola with the Taino.
