Long Beach Public Works to Host Community Meeting on Anaheim Street Corridor Improvement Project

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach is taking steps to improve the safety and accessibility of one of its busiest corridors. The Anaheim Street Corridor Improvement Project, set to begin in early 2027, will rehabilitate approximately four miles of pavement along Anaheim Street from the Los Angeles River to Pacific Coast Highway.

To inform community members about the project, the Department of Public Works is hosting a community meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026 at the MacArthur Park Community Center. The meeting will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and will provide attendees with an opportunity to learn more about the project, ask questions, and review planned improvements. Interpretation services in Spanish, Tagalog, and Khmer will be available.

Anaheim Street is a vital east-west corridor in Long Beach that serves neighborhoods, commercial districts, schools, transit routes, and regional destinations. However, portions of the street have been identified as part of the City's High Injury Network due to a history of serious traffic collisions. The Anaheim Street Corridor Improvement Project aims to address these safety concerns while also improving accessibility for all road users.

Planned improvements include upgrades to traffic signals at 20 locations, ADA accessibility enhancements, new crosswalks at 13 locations, and improvements to existing crosswalks for better visibility and safety. The project also includes pavement rehabilitation and updated markings, controlled-access medians at key locations, pedestrian refuge areas at new median crossings to shorten crossing distances and improve safety, transit access enhancements, and drought-tolerant landscaping.

The project aligns with Complete Streets principles that prioritize the safety and mobility of all road users. It also supports the City's Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries. Guided by the Pavement Management Plan (PMP) and Safe Streets Long Beach Action Plan, this project is part of the City's commitment to creating a safer, more accessible, and equitable multimodal street network.

Funding for the project comes from various sources, including Metro Propositions A and C, Measures M and R, Community Project Funding Congressionally Directed Funding, the Highway Safety Improvement Program, Gas Tax, Traffic Impact Fees, CRRSAA, City Measure A, and City Measure A bond. It is also a part of the Elevate '28 Infrastructure Investment Plan, a significant initiative dedicated to enhancing Long Beach's parks, community facilities, mobility access, and streets.
