Las Vegas nonprofit promoting literacy & building confidence hosts free event for 100 kids on Nov 21

LAS VEGAS - EntSun -- One hundred Las Vegas children will each take home a book of their own, a plush companion, and affirmation stickers on Saturday, November 21, at no cost to their families.

Penelope's Confidence Experience runs from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave. Children ages 4 to 10 hear the book read aloud, make affirmation notes to keep at the affirmations station, meet the author, and leave with a signed copy of Penelope and the Vase book, a plush companion, and affirmation stickers. There will be a resource area for families to visit. The afternoon is built to do two things at once: put a book in a child's hands and provide them with confidence-building tools.

The woman behind the event, Danyail Lawton, is a retire Air Force veteran. She served 23 years, including two tours in Afghanistan.

What she carried out was a short story she wrote in the ninth grade and the yellow sticky note that her teacher left on it. She kept both for 29 years. That story is now a picture book, and the note named her foundation.

"It likely took my teacher ten seconds to write that note, and I kept it for 29 years," Lawton said. "That is what I want these children to leave with. Something small enough to carry and strong enough to keep."
