Global Kids Youth Delve into Foreign Policy at the 2019 "U.S. in the World" Summer Institute
EntSun News/10783497
NEW YORK - EntSun -- While many of their peers are at the beach or relaxing, twenty-six New York City high school students from predominately underserved communities will converge for an intense three-week summer program at the nation's leading foreign policy think tank. Through its unique partnership with the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), Global Kids' award-winning "U.S. in the World" International Law and Foreign Policy Institute will expose youth to critical foreign policy and global issues, and provide them with opportunities to dialogue with Council Fellows, prominent guest speakers, and organizations operating in the international affairs sector.
The program runs weekdays from July 8 through July 26, 2019, from 9am – 5pm at CFR's New York location on 58 East 68th Street, and was first launched in 2005.
During the three-week institute, students will engage in leadership development activities and explore such pressing foreign policy issues as global economics/trade wars, climate change, terrorism, proxy wars, migration and immigration policy, international governance, and attacks on journalism. The group will also take field trips to the U.S. Mission to the UN, United Nations, the New York Times, and the Sorensen Center for International Peace and Justice at CUNY Law School. Scheduled expert speakers offering their foreign policy expertise and knowledge include:

· Shannon O' Neil, CFR Senior Fellow for Latin American Studies
· Jamille Bigio, CFR Senior Fellow for Women and Foreign Policy Program
· Michelle Gavin, CFR Senior Fellow for African Studies
· Benn Steil, CFR Senior and Director of Economics
"Global Kids believes young people, especially those from marginalized communities, bring fresh and important perspectives to conversations about foreign policy," said Evie Hantzopoulos, Global Kids Executive Director. "They care deeply about the world, and while some may underestimate their capacity to grapple with such sophisticated and complex issues, consistently we've seen our students ask our guest speakers and experts probing, thoughtful, and very tough questions."
