The Tough Skin, Soft Heart greeting card brand is the first locally-sourced, Black-owned greeting card company carried at Woodward Corner Market.
DETROIT - EntSun -- "This is a homecoming..."
That is how Founder Shannon Cohen [Shannon Cohen, Inc.] describes the upcoming September 5th installation of her Tough Skin, Soft Heart greeting card and inspirational goods product line at Woodward Corner Market in metro Detroit. This installation makes Shannon's work the first locally-sourced, Black-owned greeting card company carried at Woodward Corner Market. "Detroit is the beloved community of my birth. The first 21 years of my life were spent here. I grew up in this community, my grandparents were entrepreneurs here, and much of my extended family still live here. Detroit is home."
Shannon is a 4th generation Detroiter. Her grandparents, Curtis and Rose Marie Collins owned and operated an auto collision shop in the University District, a Northwest Detroit neighborhood. Shannon graduated from Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School and is a proud alumnus of Detroit Public Schools. She attributes her acumen in business to the lessons of entrepreneurship seeded throughout her Detroit upbringing. "My grandparents were 'Local First' advocates long before a name for the movement existed. I remember accompanying them as they networked with and purchased from other University District and Avenue of Fashion [Livernois Avenue] businesses. They taught me the importance of relationship capital, work ethic, a good name, sourcing local goods, and sowing into your community. These values are reflected in my life's work and undergird the business partnerships we have today. "

Shannon's Tough Skin, Soft Heart product line is already available at Bridge Street Market, the West Michigan sister store of Meijer's Woodward Corner Market. This installation marks the second Meijer location to carry Tough Skin, Soft Heart products. Cohen is excited by the opportunity to grow in relationship with Meijer and the company's retail footprint in Southeast Michigan. "Words heal", says Cohen. "Words allow us to touch the heart and soul of others. The realities of COVID-19 make social distance necessary, but we can still nurture connection and touch through greeting cards. I also love the location of The Woodward Corner Market. The store is an anchoring retailer in the Woodward Corners by Beaumont development. The store is steps away from Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. I look forward to serving customers looking for ways to express love, care, and concern in this season of pandemic."
