Cryolab Publishes Practical Guidance on Liquid Nitrogen Tank Safety for Laboratories
EntSun News/11102070
UK cryogenic equipment supplier sets out four low cost controls, drawing on BCGA Code of Practice 30, HSE guidance and current ESHRE and ASRM cryostorage recommendations.
LONDON - EntSun -- Chichester, United Kingdom. Cryolab, a specialist supplier of cryogenic equipment, consumables and servicing to the healthcare, fertility and research sectors, has published new guidance on liquid nitrogen tank safety aimed at laboratory managers, embryologists and safety officers.
The guidance opens with a calculation many laboratories have never performed. Liquid nitrogen expands approximately 683 to 1 by volume as it warms to room temperature, a figure published in BCGA Code of Practice 30. On that basis a 175 litre storage vessel holds in the region of 120 cubic metres of nitrogen gas, which is greater than the total volume of many rooms in which such vessels are kept.

The article emphasises that no vessel releases its full contents in a single event, and that the value of the calculation lies in showing the operating margin rather than predicting an outcome. It notes that vessels boil off continuously, that each fill vents a surge, and that delivery dewars left temporarily in a room add to the total, so a room commissioned as safe for one vessel is not automatically safe for three.
On oxygen depletion, the guidance cites CP30's statement that asphyxia due to oxygen deficiency is often rapid with no prior warning to the victim, and the HSE recommendation that workplace oxygen remains above 19.5 per cent. It points to the University of St Andrews trigger points of 19.5 per cent for urgent investigation and 18 per cent for immediate evacuation as published values laboratories can adopt.
Among the practical recommendations is placing the oxygen monitor's alarm indicator on the outside of the store room door, so that the warning reaches a person who has not yet entered, and a rule that vessels travel in lifts unaccompanied.

The guidance also addresses ice plug formation in open neck storage dewars, which are not pressure vessels, and sets out the sequence described in CP30 whereby an ice plug can form a seal preventing the release of gas and leading to a rise in internal pressure.
On monitoring, the article references the ESHRE 2026 good practice recommendations for the IVF laboratory, which expect cryostorage tanks to be continuously monitored with alarms that detect and log out of range temperature or liquid nitrogen level, and the ASRM 2020 cryostorage opinion, which recommends level probes in the liquid over temperature probes in the vapour on the basis that level falls first.
