Composer Julia Piker to debut score EP, Samovar, on June 10th

LOS ANGELES - EntSun -- London International Award-winning film and television composer Julia Piker, whose credits include Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1, producing the new theme for Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader and music for ALVINNN!!! and the Chipmunks, both on Nickelodeon, and whose first EP Biting Biding released in 2017, will debut her string and electronic-heavy score EP Samovar on June 10.

Julia composed, arranged, produced, and engineered the record. The record will be released on Spotify and all digital platforms. The EP features a total of four tracks and runs 11 minutes.

Julia explains, "I wanted this EP to embody the feeling of growing and expanding beyond the parts of ourselves that we hide. I wanted it to lean in, breathe, and recoil. To work through feelings of inadequacy that cause us to bend our own values and interests just to make others comfortable."

For her score EP, she infused her pop songwriting sensibilities with cinematic influences, creating lush vocal textures and driving percussive movements. Piano, cello, viola, bansuri, flute and clarinet all come together on this EP to give the listener a unique experience. Track three on the album, Simone, features a solo cello under a bed of electronic and vocal movements, as well as airy and textural sound effects that pull the listener into a dreamstate.

Julia shares her journey of breaking away from what she originally thought she could do with her voice, "Stacks and stacks of manipulated vocal melodies created a bed of sound for me to paint over with the instruments of my choice. They create chaos just as they create stability and serenity. I wanted that juxtaposition to drive these pieces"

It was important for Julia to work with musicians that weren't afraid to step away from the sheet music and as Julia explains, "-feel into what they were expressing with me. To bend and to break the rules. To step away from what we're taught, and to lean into what we feel."

This EP expresses Julia's desire to step into the light for the first time and bypass traditionalism in the scoring world. The tracks pull from both classical and pop elements, as Julia showcases her varying musical background and is inspired by her family and upbringing, which was impacted by the harsh realities and regulations around expression.

Julia played with looping and built the movements around repetition and the coalescence of voice and instrument, an unusual and trailblazing approach.

Julia Piker is an award-winning composer who currently supports Emmy-nominated composers Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans on several upcoming and ongoing projects. In addition, she is a former staff composer at Pulse Music in New York City and runs her own music production company. Her film credits include Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1, starring Michael Jordan, Lena Waithe, and Mark Wahlberg and To Dust, starring Mathew Broderick. Television credits include producing the new theme for Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader and music for ALVINNN!!! and the Chipmunks, both on Nickelodeon. She also scored The Eulogist, a short produced by Hero LA.

She previously released her first solo EP, Biting Biding, in June 2017. It featured her pop-rock songwriting, which led to sync placement in the upcoming UFC Documentary Origins of the Octagon from the creators of Netflix's The Last Dance.

Julia has scored a number of commercials for well-known brands such as AT&T, Charmin, BMW, IBM, Wendy's, Hinge, Cox, Adobe, Purdue, and Lexus. Her score for Proctor and Gamble's "The Talk" won her a London International Award for Original Music, as well as an AICP nomination for Best Original Music. Julia was on the Clio Awards sound Jury in 2019. She traces her musical roots back to her grandfather, who was an accomplished musician in the Russian Philharmonic.
