Virtual Interest Meetings to Teach How to Start Survivor Support Groups

LEHI, Utah - EntSun -- The Younique Foundation is offering online interest meetings for survivors of child sexual abuse who want to start support groups in their communities. Finding Hope Support Groups offer adult female survivors of child sexual abuse a place to come together to find safety, community, and education. Survivors also learn from each other by creating an environment of hope, acceptance, and encouragement.

The free interest meetings are scheduled for the following dates and times:

• July 28, 1 p.m. MDT
• Aug. 25, 5 p.m. MDT
• Sept. 22, 10 a.m. MDT
• Oct. 28, 11 a.m. MDT
• Nov. 10, 4 p.m. MDT
• Dec. 8, 12 p.m. MDT

Finding Hope Support Groups are led by survivors for survivors in local communities, and are structured with free clinically informed and researched-based resources from the Foundation. There are currently support groups in 10 countries offered in English, Spanish, French, and German. "We developed Finding Hope Support Groups to help survivors build a community that is safe and provides key education," said Karen Brown, Community Outreach manager for the Foundation. "These groups can be launched in communities across the world and bring healing tools to survivors in a peer-led support group setting. As survivors participate in these groups, they see that they aren't alone. They share resources with each other and help each other learn how to manage their triggers and improve their quality of life."

"The upcoming interest meetings will help survivors learn how to start a support group in their local community. Community leaders wanting to assist in facilitating a group are also invited to attend," said Jocelyn Cooper, the Foundation's Regional Outreach coordinator in Georgia. Community groups may include loved ones who support survivors, healthcare organizations, behavioral and mental health organizations, faith-based organizations, law enforcement and criminal justice, child advocacy centers, and education institutions. Those already leading groups may also want to attend to get ideas on how to increase membership and enhance their efficacy.

Cooper said the Find Hope Support Group was piloted in Utah in the Fall of 2017. Some of the original members are still meeting and some have started additional support groups in their communities. The Foundation launched its findinghope.org website in March 2018 which provides training videos and information on how to find or start a support group. Additional guidance is available through the website that supports new groups with a 21-week framework on how to provide immediate benefit to those who participate. Support groups can meet in person or online, and do not involve therapy.
