South Seas set to make a splash with return of Captiva Island Triathlon
EntSun News/11101045
SANIBEL ISLAND, Fla. - EntSun -- South Seas will welcome athletes from across the country to Captiva Island on Sept. 27 for the annual South Seas Captiva Island Triathlon, a USA Triathlon (USAT) sanctioned event and part of the 2026 USA Triathlon State Championship Pilot Program. An annual tradition at South Seas, the beginner-friendly race pairs a swim in the Gulf with a bike course closed to vehicular traffic and a scenic run along the island's shoreline.
The event offers five ways to compete. The Super Sprint Triathlon, designed for first-time racers, includes a 200-yard swim, five-mile bike ride and 1.5-mile run. Athletes seeking a longer distance can choose the Sprint Triathlon, a quarter-mile swim, 10-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run, or the Sprint Duathlon, a one-mile run, 10-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run. The Sprint Aquabike pairs a quarter-mile swim with a 10-mile bike ride, and two- or three-person teams can take on the course together in the Sprint Triathlon Relay.
Races begin between 7:15 and 7:40 a.m., depending on the event, at South Seas. Captiva Drive will close at Blind Pass from 6:45 to 9 a.m. for the race, the main road onto Captiva Island from Sanibel. With parking extremely limited on the island, spectators are asked to carpool with athletes or park in designated areas outside the resort gates and ride the trolley, which begins running at 5 a.m., to the start and finish line.
