SEM Link Launches Ink and Innovation, a Workshop Series for Teens to Explore STEM Storytelling

ATLANTA - EntSun -- Science, Engineering and Mathematics Link Inc (SEM Link) is launching Ink and Innovation, a new workshop series for teens. Ink and Innovation is a program of SEM Link's STEM Literacy and Research Program. It invites teens to explore different formats of STEM storytelling while diving into creative writing and art.

The first workshop in the series, Ink and Innovation: Drawing STEM Comic Strips, will take place on Saturday, October 3, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Gladys S. Dennard Library at South Fulton. At this workshop, hosted in partnership with In the Loop Program of Success, teens will learn about the history of African American comic book and comic strip creators. They will also watch a screening of a new short film on Brumsic Brandon Jr., creator of the comic strip Luther. They will explore how STEM concepts show up in comics, then design their own STEM-inspired comic book or strip and share their ideas with the group.

"Brumsic Brandon, Jr: The Art of Legacy & Community" is a short documentary about the first Black cartoonist to have his strip, Luther, in the mainstream press. It gives a glimpse of the work of Brandon influenced by his upbringing in Washington, DC.. "I'm honored to support the work of SEM Link through Ink & Innovation. I believe in creating avenues for youth to find STEM in the arts. As a math lover who is a filmmaker and creative, the exploration of connecting drawing to innovation excites me and fuels my idea engine. We have to plant these seeds of creative power at a young age and in various ways so that they can discover how colorful and accessible STEM is." said Dr. Carletta S. Hurt Director of In the Loop Program of Success.

More workshops in the Ink and Innovation series will introduce teens to other forms of STEM storytelling, including Afrofuturism, graphic novels and more. "STEM is how we solve problems and create a better future for ourselves. Through STEM storytelling, teens get to use STEM to build a world that may not exist yet. Ink and Innovation connects STEM, writing and art so teens can take STEM concepts and theories and turn them into the stories they want to tell," said Ms. Tokiwa T.
