Names Are Not Important Asks What Remains When Identity Is Stripped of Labels

HOUSTON - EntSun -- Villa Sova Press announces the October 1 release of Names Are Not Important, the debut literary novel by Houston author Jen Lee.

Told without naming a single character, Names Are Not Important is a fragmented, nonlinear exploration of identity, memory, love, grief, and the experiences that accumulate into a life. Rather than introducing characters through names or conventional identifiers, the novel asks readers to encounter them through what they remember, carry, and leave behind.

"The premise of the novel was diving into identity without its fundamental piece," Lee says. "I wasn't interested in telling the reader who these people are. I wanted readers to experience them first. We attach so much to a name before a person has the chance to become anything else."

She continues, "When people are gone from our lives, what remains of them isn't usually a name. That's just a placeholder for whatever it is they leave behind. I was interested in excavating what it might take for a reader to forget about most of our identifiers by the end of the novel, and still become completely immersed in the story."

The novel's structure mirrors that idea. Memories recur, shift and resurface rather than resolving neatly, allowing meaning to emerge through accumulation. The result is a story less interested in explaining a life than examining how one is constructed — and what remains when the usual labels are stripped away.

As both author and artist in commercial design, Lee's creative process extends into the book's visual identity. She developed the cover and interior using typography, repetition and visual marks to echo the novel's preoccupation with identity, memory and residue.

Names Are Not Important will be published October 1, 2026, by Villa Sova Press in paperback, hardcover and ebook editions.
