Statewide ~ Colorado Receives $23.2 Million in Grants to Expand Electric Vehicle Fast-Charging Network

The Colorado Energy Office (CEO) and Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) have announced a significant investment in the state's electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. On Tuesday, they revealed that $23.2 million in grants will be awarded to expand the state's fast-charging network through the Direct Current Fast-Charging (DCFC) Plazas initiative.

Funded by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program and the state's Community Access Enterprise (CAE), these grants will add 270 new fast-charging ports at 35 locations across Colorado. This will increase the state's existing network of over 1,680 fast-charging ports by 16%.

Governor Jared Polis expressed his excitement about the expansion, stating that Colorado is a national leader in EV adoption and these new funds will make it even more convenient for families to switch to electric vehicles. He believes this investment will not only save money for Coloradans but also contribute to a cleaner environment.

According to CEO Executive Director Will Toor, access to convenient fast-charging is crucial in achieving the state's EV adoption goals and working towards net-zero emissions by 2050. He also highlighted the impact of transportation on air pollution and how widespread EV adoption can help improve air quality.

The current grant award brings CEO's total investment in fast-charging infrastructure to about $71.8 million, supporting a total of 795 new ports through this program. This has significantly increased access to EV charging, with 83% of Colorado's state highway network now within 30 miles of a fast-charging station.

CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew praised Colorado for setting the national standard for an EV-ready mountain state. She believes these continued investments make it possible for drivers to take their EVs anywhere in the state, as shown by the high demand for fast-charging options.

The grants, supported by NEVI and CAE, aim to fill charging gaps along Colorado's federally designated alternative fuel corridors and meet the growing demand for EV charging in communities. The current awards will address critical gaps in the state's infrastructure, including locations such as Saguache, Ignacio, and Holly.

To ensure that the benefits of electric transportation reach those most affected by air pollution from transportation, CEO prioritizes projects in disproportionately impacted communities and the ozone nonattainment area.

The grant awardees include charging station operators, fuel providers, convenience stores, and local governments. The projects are expected to be completed over the next two years.

CEO plans to continue offering funding through the DCFC Plazas program with support from both NEVI and CAE. The next request for applications will open on September 28, 2026.

With this significant investment in expanding Colorado's fast-charging network, the state is taking a big step towards achieving its EV adoption goals and creating a cleaner future for all. Families across the state will now have more convenient options to switch to electric vehicles and contribute to a healthier environment.
