OPINION: Fiscal discipline is why Idaho finished strong

~ Idaho Governor Brad Little has announced that the state has successfully closed Fiscal Year 2026 in a stronger financial position than projected. This achievement is a result of the state's commitment to living within its means and making responsible budget decisions.

Unlike neighboring states on the West Coast and the federal government, Idaho does not spend money it does not have. Governor Little emphasized that the state does not raise taxes when budgets get tight, but instead focuses on right-sizing spending to match taxpayers' means. This approach was evident in the governor's ENDURING IDAHO budget plan, which prioritized spending and asked state agencies to operate more efficiently.

The governor stated that these decisions were based on the best financial information available at the time, as Idaho has always succeeded by planning ahead and making decisions grounded in facts. As a result, Idaho was able to close Fiscal Year 2026 with general fund revenues above both executive and legislative forecasts.

Governor Little also highlighted that this achievement was made while preserving investments in important priorities such as public schools, transportation, water infrastructure, public safety, workforce development, and rural healthcare. However, he made it clear that this does not mean there is suddenly unlimited new money for government spending.

While transferring hundreds of millions into the new fiscal year is a positive development for Idaho's financial position, it does not create a permanent source of funding for ongoing government spending.
