Maryland Department of Agriculture Invests $670,000 in Innovative Soil Health and Agroforestry Practices

ANNAPOLIS, MD (July 13, 2026) ~ Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Department of Agriculture has announced a significant investment in the state's farming community. A total of $670,000 in grant funding will be distributed to farms and organizations to support the adoption of conservation practices that benefit the climate, soil, and water.

The Healthy Soils Competitive Fund, established in 2023 following recommendations from the Soil Health Advisory Committee, will award grants of up to $50,000 to qualifying applicants. These grants will support three years of enhanced soil health and agroforestry practices.

Nineteen projects across Maryland have been selected to receive funding for their innovative conservation practices. These projects will also provide progress updates throughout the grant period. Some of the projects include developing soil health resources for equestrians in Baltimore City, enhancing pollinator habitats and conservation covers in Baltimore County, and implementing an agroforestry project in Washington County.

Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks emphasized the importance of healthy soils for productive farms and thriving ecosystems. He stated that it is encouraging to see more farmers embracing innovative conservation practices each year. With a 16% increase in applications compared to last year, this program is helping producers invest in practices that not only strengthen their operations but also protect natural resources for future generations.

Since its inception, the Healthy Soils Competitive Fund has supported 88 projects across the state. This funding is made possible through the Moore-Miller Administration's implementation of the Climate Solutions Now Act and a Climate Pollution Reduction Grant awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to the Atlantic Conservation Coalition.
