Lachlan Anderson's Grafted Original Score to be Released
EntSun News/11048747
LOS ANGELES - EntSun -- Lachlan Anderson's score to the upcoming horror/thriller, Grafted, is getting a digital release on January 31, 2025. The album consists of 17 original tracks. The film, directed by Sasha Rainbow, first premiered at the Sitges International Film Festival in 2024 and began streaming on Shudder last week. The film stars Joyena Sun, Jess Hong, and Jared Turner. It was written by Mia Maramara, Hweiling Ow, Lee Murray, and Rainbow. Some of Anderson's other credits include Netflix's Tabula Rasa, David Farrier's Mister Organ and Hulu's Rūrangi. The score will be available on all major digital sites including Spotify, Amazon and Apple Music.
When discussing his work on the film Anderson says, "I had a lot of fun making this score with Sasha Rainbow. The film has a few genre blends, which we really wanted to be reflected in the score. Alongside the horror elements, we also wanted to have a contemporary feel highlighting the teen angst of our main characters, which I represented with distorted, punky techno at key moments.
We attempted to give the score a fairytale quality, which descends into madness, shadowing the arc of the film and Wei's journey. The music follows Wei, especially at the early part of the film. She arrives in New Zealand, exploring her new home, watching everyone else and feeling like an outsider. The score is magical and hopeful, but also slightly off… Not to give anything away - but it gives a little foreshadowing to the carnage that awaits.

Grafted was one of those rare films where I was rewarded for going a bit bonkers and got to play with all sorts of weird sounds. A personal highlight was recording a lot of strange articulations on the double bass and manipulating them to reverse or hitting the bass and creating the metronomic cue as the film descends into chaos. The score is generally a mashup of stringed instruments (violins and double basses) and vocalizing, which have been contorted and processed to become something new. We loved the idea of a kind of goblin-monster archetype, which inspired the twisted, warped and reversed sounds that typically happen when Wei becomes slightly more unhinged. My focus was to create a score that reflects Wei's state of trying to hold it all together… until it all falls apart."
The synopsis for Grafted reads: "Chinese scholarship student Wei travels to New Zealand to study medical research at a prestigious university. Shy, introverted, and hiding a genetic facial birthmark, Wei is shunned by her social butterfly cousin Angela and her glamorous friends. Determined to change her fate, Wei immerses herself in her late father's research, working on a revolutionary skin grafting procedure that could cure her deformity. As her experiments take a dark turn, she becomes more dangerous and unhinged, willing to eliminate anyone who threatens her secret."
