He Built a Math Tutor for His Four-Year-Old. Eleven of the Twelve Friends Asked to Keep It

NEW YORK - EntSun -- Math Anon (mathanon.com) opened to the public today. It's an AI math tutor for K-12 students that works one student at a time, from home, for $79 a month.

The product started with one child. Founder Jon Sterling's daughter was four and already ahead of her class. Flash cards didn't hold her. The tutoring centers near his home in Vero Beach quoted him several hundred dollars a month for group sessions built around a grade level, not around her. So he built something for her instead.

He gave it to a dozen friends to test. Eleven asked to keep using it. That's when it became a company.

"I wasn't trying to start a company," Sterling said. "I wanted my kid to keep moving while she was still interested. The surprise was how many parents wanted the same thing and couldn't get it at a price that made sense."

Math Anon starts with a short adaptive assessment that covers counting through calculus. It finds the specific skills a student is missing, then teaches those skills in order before it moves ahead. Sessions run 20 to 25 minutes. Parents get a plain-language report after each one.

"Almost nobody fails algebra because of algebra," Sterling said. "They fail because something back in fourth grade never got fixed, and every year after that gets built on top of it. School can't stop and go back. A tutor can."

The launch follows growing evidence for one-on-one AI instruction at scale. In El Salvador, roughly a million students received an AI math tutor, and June 2026 results put them in line with Germany and Sweden on the OECD PISA assessment. The country's 2022 national math average was 343.
