Governor Polis, DOR Announce Tax Relief for Those Impacted by Colorado Wildfires

DENVER ~ In light of the ongoing wildfires in Colorado, Governor Jared Polis and the Department of Revenue have announced that they will be waiving penalties for late income tax extension filings and sales tax payments. This relief will be available to all residents and businesses in Dolores, Montezuma, Lake, Mesa, Pueblo, Custer, Ouray, Las Animas, Baca, Routt, San Miguel and Huerfano counties. The list of eligible counties may expand as Governor Polis declares additional emergency declarations.

Governor Polis emphasized the importance of providing support to those affected by the wildfires. He stated that no Coloradan should have to choose between rebuilding their life and meeting a tax deadline. By extending these deadlines and waiving penalties for late filings, the state is aiming to alleviate some of the added pressure on those impacted by the fires.

Brendon Reese, Senior Director of the Taxation Division at the Department of Revenue, also expressed their commitment to helping those affected by the wildfires. He urged impacted individuals and businesses to reach out for assistance so that they can focus on rebuilding and recovering without worrying about tax deadlines.

The Department of Revenue has extended the deadlines for certain state tax filings until December 31. This includes income tax extensions due on October 15 and sales taxes due between July 20 and October 20. Taxpayers can also request penalty waivers for other taxes and fees due in October by contacting DOR. The deadline for filing these taxes has been extended until November 6, 2026.

It is important to note that this relief only applies to state taxes and does not include municipal taxes collected by home-rule cities such as Pueblo, Cortez, Durango and more.

To request an extended deadline after receiving a bill from DOR, eligible taxpayers must call the Department at 303-238-SERV (7378) during business hours (Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). The Department will not automatically apply the tax deadline waiver.
