Governor Newsom announces deployment of California firefighters to support wildfire efforts in Oregon
EntSun News/11097467
~ SACRAMENTO - In a recent press release, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that California will be deploying 10 CAL FIRE firefighters to support firefighting efforts on the East Evans Creek Fire in Oregon. The wildfire, which has burned over 2,600 acres and remains at 0% containment as of July 14, 2026, is facing elevated fire weather concerns and gusty winds.
This deployment marks the first time that California has sent firefighting resources to Oregon under the Northwest Compact. The CAL FIRE personnel departed from California on Tuesday and are expected to remain in Oregon for up to 14 days.
Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of neighbor helping neighbor and stated that it is one of California's core values. He also acknowledged Oregon's past support during major wildfires in California and expressed his gratitude by saying, "Oregon has been there to help us, and now we are showing up with a helping hand."
CAL FIRE Director and Fire Chief Joe Tyler also highlighted the strong partnership between California and Oregon, stating that their ability to support each other during critical incidents is paramount.

In recent years, Oregon has deployed resources during several major incidents in California, including the 2025 Eaton and Palisades Fires. This mutual aid system allows for highly trained personnel and specialized resources to be shared between states during times of need.
The deployment of these firefighters will not impact capacity in California as CAL FIRE will maintain full staffing levels and deploy reserve fire engines to continue protecting Californians alongside local, state, federal, and tribal partners. The Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) will also continue coordinating the California Fire and Rescue Mutual Aid system to support any new or emerging wildfires.
California has a long history of answering the call when communities face their greatest challenges. Through its nationally recognized mutual aid system, the state has deployed resources to disasters across the country and around the world. Most recently, California sent resources to Colorado for the first time under the National Association of State Foresters (NASF) state-to-state partnership.

The state has also responded to disasters in Florida, Washington, Alaska, Texas, New Mexico, Oregon, Montana, Wisconsin, Hawaii, Jamaica, Arizona, and Puerto Rico. This includes providing support during hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.
In addition to this deployment of firefighters to Oregon, Governor Newsom has also launched the One Less Spark campaign in California. This statewide public awareness effort aims to prevent wildfires as the state heads into a hotter and drier season. The campaign builds on record investments in wildfire prevention and readiness.
Furthermore, Governor Newsom has warned lenders that they must provide timely and fair payouts to Los Angeles fire survivors. He stated that those who fail to help with recovery by needlessly denying or delaying access to insurance funds will be subject to state enforcement. He also clarified that state damage assessments will be used for insurance claims if necessary.
In other news from the Governor's office on July 14th, 2026, several appointments were announced including Tyrone Evans being appointed to the California Workforce Development Board. Evans has been Senior Superintendent at Webcor Builders since 2020.
