FEMA Releases Funding for Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Grants for Colorado, Some Dating Back to 2013

DENVER ~ Denver, CO - In response to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) obligation of $90 million for the FEMA Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Grant programs, Governor Jared Polis expressed his gratitude for the funding that will aid in disaster recovery efforts and mitigate future disasters.

The $90 million will reimburse state and local governments for completed disaster recovery efforts and provide financing for approved mitigation initiatives from prior year disasters. These projects include flood prevention, stormwater system upgrades, and wildfire mitigation measures.

Governor Polis acknowledged the hard work of Colorado communities in recovering from past disasters such as storms, floods, and fires. He also commended their efforts in taking proactive steps to keep communities safe. The released funds will reimburse the costs of these important efforts that have made homes, infrastructure, and public spaces more resilient to future disasters.

"I am glad to see FEMA release these funds, which are critical for protecting communities and rebuilding in ways to better withstand future disasters," said Governor Polis. He also expressed his appreciation for President Biden's approval of Colorado's separate request for Public Assistance for Pueblo, Custer, Ouray, and Dolores counties. He hopes that the administration will soon approve the Individual Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funding for these counties impacted by this summer's fires.

Out of the $90 million released by FEMA today, $28 million will go towards state and local governments to cover critical infrastructure repairs, restoration of public buildings, road repairs, and reimbursement for public safety projects related to past disasters. Some of the approved projects include repairs to water drainage systems in Colorado Springs and repairs to roads and park buildings damaged by storms and flooding in Boulder County.

The remaining $62 million will be allocated towards Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funding that aims to make communities safer in the face of future emergencies and natural disasters. These proactive efforts include reducing wildfire risk by upgrading power lines and moving them underground, reducing erosion, and protecting homes and utilities from flood risk, and improving stormwater systems.

Some of the approved initiatives include $8 million for Colorado Springs to provide 100-year flood protection, $7.6 million for Mountain Parks Electric Inc. to reduce wildfire risk, $5.7 million for the Colorado Front Range Wildfire Mitigation project, and $1.8 million for the Town of Kersey to improve stormwater drainage.

A full list of approved initiatives can be found on the FEMA website. These reimbursements are for disasters that occurred between 2013 and 2025 and are not part of Colorado's request for Individual Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Grants as part of the Aspen Acres and Gold Mountain Fires Major Disaster Declaration that is still under review.

The release of these funds by FEMA is a crucial step in helping Colorado communities recover from past disasters and prepare for future ones. Governor Polis remains committed to working with federal agencies to ensure that all necessary resources are provided to support communities impacted by natural disasters in the state.
