Little-known Frederick Lonsdale script receives staged reading at Arts + Literature Laboratory

MADISON, Wis. - EntSun -- On Tuesday November 23, Falconbridge Players revives another play from obscurity for the enjoyment of Madison's arts and theater audiences. "Spring Cleaning" by Frederick Lonsdale, never before seen in Wisconsin, will be presented as a full-cast staged reading at Arts + Literature Laboratory at 7 PM.

The play, written and set in 1923, was dubbed by one critic a "highly varnished comedy about upper class sin." When dashing rival Ernest Steele seduces Richard Sones' wife Margaret, Sones doesn't write a poem, take up dance, or hit the gym. He brings a prostitute home for dinner. Hilarity ensues.

"Spring Cleaning" premiered in Detroit's Bonstelle Theatre on September 2, 1923 before moving on to Chicago and Broadway. It skipped Wisconsin and there are no records of the play being performed in the state. In its day the play was a star vehicle for actresses portraying the role of Margaret Sones, including silent film idol Pauline Frederick, Violet Heming, and Cecily Byrne.
