Bloomington: City Shares July Road Closure Updates as Several Projects Shift Into Next Phase

~ Bloomington, IN- As the summer season continues, the City of Bloomington is providing updated information on road closures for several ongoing infrastructure projects.

City Engineer Andrew Cibor acknowledged the busy construction season, stating that a combination of utility work, development projects, and transportation facility maintenance and safety improvements have made it a hectic time. He also expressed gratitude for the community's patience and understanding as crews work tirelessly in the summer heat to complete these important infrastructure investments that will benefit the city for years to come.

According to the latest schedule released on Monday, July 13, there are several road closures and detours in effect. However, these dates are subject to change depending on weather conditions and project needs.

Starting July 13th, Grimes Lane is expected to reopen sometime during the week but exact timing may shift. Additionally, a Monroe County project will begin on July 13th and continue until October 9th at Rhorer Road Bridge west of Sare Road. A detour using City streets will be in place during this time.

The detour for westbound traffic will involve taking Sare Road northbound and then turning west onto Rogers Road before heading south on Walnut Street Pike. For eastbound traffic, drivers will need to take Walnut Street Pike northbound before turning east onto Winslow and then south onto Sare Road. The intersection of Kirkwood and Rogers will also see temporary lane shifts starting from the week of July 13th as foundations for new signal poles are placed. Each leg of the intersection will have a temporary lane closure with through traffic being shifted into the left-turn lane which will be shared by all vehicles making right turns, going straight or turning left. These lane shifts are expected to last between 1-3 days per leg.

On July 15th or 16th, First Street west of Rogers Street will be closed for approximately one week. North Walnut Street north of 17th Street, which was reopened on July 10th, will see final repairs and a closure on July 16th.

College Avenue south of Third Street is still closed but is expected to reopen on July 24th.

Looking ahead, West Kirkwood Avenue will be closed starting from July 20th for approximately two weeks. However, access to local businesses and residences will be maintained throughout the closure. The work will be done in stages, starting with closures at Jackson Street and Maple Street while Fairview Street remains open for local access.

The closure timing for the Second Street and Rogers Street intersection area is yet to be determined but is expected to take place after College Avenue reopens and First Street work is complete. Additionally, Rogers Street will also see a closure at Dodds on the north leg of the intersection with a detour in place for east-west traffic. The exact timing for this closure is yet to be determined but it is currently expected to take place during the last week of July.

The City would like to thank everyone who has adjusted their routes or left a few minutes early to accommodate these road closures and detours. These projects are being coordinated by the City's Public Works and Engineering teams as part of their ongoing efforts to maintain and improve Bloomington's streets, utilities, and public infrastructure.

Communications Director Desiree DeMolina apologized for any inconvenience caused by these closures, acknowledging that it can be frustrating when normal routes are disrupted. She encouraged residents to check the City's inRoads website before traveling for the most up-to-date information on road impacts.
