Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy Launches National Celebration of Founder's Centennial

~ The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy has announced the launch of the Barbara Bush Centennial, a yearlong celebration honoring the 100th anniversary of its founder's birth. Barbara Pierce Bush, who was born on June 8, 1925, was not only a beloved first lady but also an accomplished author, mother, and grandmother. She was a passionate advocate for literacy and established the foundation in 1989, remaining actively involved until her passing at the age of 92 in 2018.

The official launch of the Barbara Bush Centennial will take place on November 20, 2024, with a special Celebration of Reading event at a private club in New York City. This event was created by Barbara Bush over three decades ago and brings together bestselling authors, entertainers, and special guests to raise support for nationwide literacy programs and increase awareness of the country's literacy challenge.

The November event will feature Brooke Shields, actor, model and author of books such as "Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old," in conversation with Lauren Bush Lauren, founder and CEO of FEED Projects. Other notable authors such as Jessamine Chan ("The School for Good Mothers") and Kirsten Miller ("Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books," "The Change") will also make appearances. The event will be co-chaired by Lori Wachs and Ali Velshi, host of "Velshi" and chief correspondent for MSNBC. Velshi will serve as emcee for the evening.

In regards to her involvement with the foundation's work, Brooke Shields stated that "literacy is opportunity" and that she is honored to partner with the Barbara Bush Foundation to support their life-changing work.

Throughout 2025, the Barbara Bush Centennial will continue with a series of Celebration of Reading events in Miami, Florida; Kennebunkport, Maine; Dallas Texas; and Washington D.C. These events will also feature select appearances by Jenna Bush Hager, co-host of "Today with Hoda & Jenna" and author, as part of TODAY's Read with Jenna book club.

Jenna Bush Hager shared that her grandmother had a significant influence on her love for reading and taught her the power of the written word. She also expressed her excitement for partnering with the Barbara Bush Foundation to bring attention to the issue of literacy, which was important to her grandmother and is now important to her.

Doro Bush Koch, honorary chair of the Barbara Bush Foundation and daughter of Barbara Bush, stated that her mother's passion for literacy has changed countless lives over the years. She believes that continuing this work is the best way to honor her mother's legacy on what would have been her 100th birthday.

In addition to the Celebration of Reading events, the Barbara Bush Centennial will also include special initiatives highlighting Barbara Bush's extraordinary life and legacy, as well as the launch of new family literacy programming. The foundation hopes that through these efforts, they can help parents and children across the country build brighter futures through literacy.
