AIM Joraco Develops System To Minimize Tube Deformation, Blade Wear, And Operator Effort

Custom Tubing Cutter for Clean and Consistent Rubber Foam Cuts
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - EntSun -- Joraco Press Company, a division of Automated Industrial Machine, Inc has decades of experience designing and building custom press machines for every industry. Our US-based manufacturing facility has engineering, machining, and assembly operations all under one roof!
A customer in the HVAC industry required a machine able to achieve a clean, smooth cut on a long ArmaFlex rubber foam insulation tube with variable lengths and diameters. Joraco evaluated four cutting concepts: guillotine blade, hot wire, band saw, and reciprocating saw. Our team of engineers proposed developing a tube cutter that uses a reciprocating saw with interchangeable confinement mandrels to cut 6" and 8" rubber foam tubing to lengths between 12-42". The main objective was to minimize tube compression during cutting, which would reduce reverse-barreling, reactionary force on the saw, blade wear, and maintenance. The confinement mandrels were designed to support the tubing around the cutting area while allowing the saw blade to pass through a slot. This was also the best option to cut with minimum deformation to the material. We've designed and fabricated a machine consisting of a reciprocating saw attached to our Direct-Aire model 300 H-frame press with confinement mandrels and a support cradle. Based on the testing, the engineering team recommended the optimized saw speed as the factory setting for the machine. Overall, the completed design met the primary objective of producing clean, consistent cuts while minimizing tube deformation, saw wear, and operator effort.

As manufacturers demand greater speed, precision, flexibility, and efficiency, Joraco's proven ability to engineer solutions for unique applications keeps its technology highly relevant to the needs of today's industrial marketplace. Joraco executes each custom solution by taking a challenge from concept to production—evaluating multiple technologies, engineering the optimal design and machining, and testing the finished machine entirely in house. This hands-on approach enables Joraco to deliver highly customized, reliable press solutions that improve efficiency, precision, and operator performance while meeting the evolving demands of today's manufacturers.
