Texas: Governor Abbott, HHSC Announce SNAP Replacement Benefits Extension Following Tropical Storm Edouard
EntSun News/11102225
~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has received federal approval to extend the deadline for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to apply for replacement benefits for food lost or destroyed due to Tropical Storm Edouard. This decision comes as part of the state's efforts to support families affected by the severe weather.
According to Governor Abbott, families impacted by the storm should not have to worry about where their next meal will come from. He stated, "SNAP replacement benefits will help families replace food that was lost or destroyed as we deliver all available resources to affected Texans."
The extended deadline for SNAP recipients to apply for replacement benefits is September 21, 2026. The funds should be added to Lone Star Cards within two business days of receiving the request.
This extension was requested by HHSC and approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Administration. It applies to SNAP recipients in Angelina, Galveston, Hardin, Houston, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Montgomery, Nacogdoches, Orange, Polk, Sabine, San Jacinto, Shelby, Trinity and Tyler counties.

Stephanie Muth, Executive Commissioner of HHS expressed her gratitude towards federal partners for allowing additional time for affected families to replace lost food. She stated that HHSC is focused on helping Texans recover after Tropical Storm Edouard.
SNAP recipients can request a benefit replacement by calling 2-1-1 and selecting option 7 after choosing a language. They can also visit a local HHSC office or find one through YourTexasBenefits.com.
In addition to SNAP recipients, clients of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women Infants and Children (WIC) can also request replacement benefits for food purchased with September WIC benefits that were lost due to power outages or storm damage. These clients are advised to contact their WIC office before September 30, 2026. Local WIC offices can be found at TexasWIC.org.
For more information on disaster assistance, Texans impacted by any disaster can visit the HHSC Receiving Disaster Assistance webpage. Those in need of local resources such as food or shelter can dial 2-1-1 and select option 1. The state is committed to providing support and resources to those affected by Tropical Storm Edouard and other disasters.
