The Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) recognizes Dr. Hans-Conrad zur Loye of the University of South Carolina and Dr. Anna-Lisa Paul of the University of Florida for groundbreaking research in solid-state chemistry and space biology.

The Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA) has named Dr. Hans-Conrad zur Loye of the University of South Carolina and Dr. Anna-Lisa Paul of the University of Florida as recipients of the 2025 SURA Distinguished Scientist Award, the consortium's highest honor for research achievement, leadership, and impact.
The awards will be presented at the SURA Annual Meeting on October 8, 2025, in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Hans-Conrad zur Loye, David W. Robinson Palmetto & Carolina Distinguished Professor and Past Associate Dean for Research at USC's Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, is a global leader in solid-state inorganic chemistry and crystal growth. He has advanced research in materials for electronics, lighting, and nuclear waste immobilization, pioneering high-temperature crystal growth and novel flux methods. With an h-index of 73, more than 575 publications, and over 21,800 citations, his honors include the South Carolina Governor's Award for Excellence in Scientific Research and election as a Fellow of the AAAS and ACS.

"We are proud to see Dr. zur Loye honored with SURA's highest award," said Dr. Mary Anne Fitzpatrick, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, University of South Carolina. "His research has achieved international distinction, and this recognition affirms the University of South Carolina's deep commitment to advancing scientific innovation through dedicated faculty leadership."
Dr. Anna-Lisa Paul, Research Professor in UF's Department of Horticultural Sciences and Director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research, co-leads the UF Space Plants Lab. She has led twelve experiments aboard the International Space Station, provided the first evidence of epigenetic change in plants grown in space, and helped achieve the first successful growth of plants in Apollo-era lunar regolith.
Her research in Antarctica and Arctic analog sites informs strategies for sustaining life on future lunar and Martian missions. She serves on the National Academies Committee on Biological and Physical Sciences in Space and co-chairs a panel on human exploration of Mars.

The SURA Distinguished Scientist Award is presented annually to faculty at member institutions whose research has lasting, cross-disciplinary impact and demonstrates exceptional leadership.
