Rotary Club Turns Sayreville's First Hispanic Festival Into Service in Action

SAYREVILLE, N.J. - EntSun -- From the earliest planning conversations through the final celebration, the Rotary Club of South Amboy and Sayreville played a leading role in bringing Sayreville's first Hispanic Heritage Festival to life.

Club members helped organize and sponsor the September 19 event at Kennedy Park, recruit volunteers, support family activities, distribute community resources and host an information table where residents could learn about Rotary and opportunities to serve.

"This was not simply an event we supported. The Rotary Club was asked to take a leading role in organizing Sayreville's first Hispanic Heritage Festival," said Eloy Fernandez, president of the Rotary Club of South Amboy and Sayreville, the Sayreville Board of Education and the Latin American Festival Committee. "This festival ensures that an important part of our community is seen, celebrated and included. We are all Americans, and our diversity makes our community stronger."

The free festival brought families and neighbors together for Latin music, cultural performances, food, children's activities, community resources and a fireworks finale. Flags representing Latin American countries lined Kennedy Park as residents celebrated the cultures shaping Sayreville today.

Rotarian Rocco Cucco said the festival showed how Rotary helps residents move from wishing for change to creating it.

"People often say, 'I wish somebody would do something,'" Cucco said. "Rotary gives you the opportunity to become that somebody. Even after a long week, taking time to serve is worth it. Seeing people enjoy themselves reminds you why community service matters."

The musical program also reflected the community's diversity. Manny Cabo, a former contestant on NBC's The Voice and La Voz and host of The VIP Voice podcast, helped bring that vision to the stage.

"The size and energy of this crowd show what happens when people unite around culture and community," Cabo said. "I wanted the music to represent the diversity of the Latin countries gathered here and give everyone something they could enjoy."

Sayreville Mayor Kennedy O'Brien praised Rotary's commitment to service and inclusion.

"Community service is what Rotary does—it is what being a Rotarian means," O'Brien said. "Every culture adds its own flavor, and this festival gave us an opportunity to celebrate that diversity while bringing our entire community together."

The festival presented a powerful picture of Rotary in action—neighbors serving neighbors, celebrating culture and strengthening their community together.
