RIOUGA Launches the Try Becca Film Festival As Unique Film Event
EntSun News/11099755
The Arts and Culture Production House Creates Film Festival Judged Entirely by Beccas as Part Parody Festival, Part Creative Outlet for Filmmakers, Part Documentary
MILWAUKEE - EntSun -- RIOUGA is happy to announce the creation of The Try Becca Film Festival, the first film festival to ever be judged entirely by people named Becca. Designed to highlight completely artificial gatekeeping, status, and festivals that take themselves either too seriously or, in the case of laurel mills, not seriously at all, Try Becca asks the following question: why can't a festival judged entirely by Beccas be as legitimate as any other metric employed by film festivals? Who decides what is serious and what is high status?
As a result, Try Becca will take place in a regular neighborhood bar but entrants and guests are asked to arrive in formal attire if they feel like it. It's low-brow fun masquerading as high culture, which is intended to be part of the appeal. Filmmakers can submit their work or find more information on their website. Submissions open on September 11th and the event takes place on the weekend of February 28th.

"We wanted to create something that people can take as seriously as they want," said cofounder David William James Elliott, the award winning director behind I Forgot to Unsubscribe from a Stock Footage Service, who recently received his black belt in BJJ from the Gracie family, and once turned down a position at Saturday Night Live to focus on sustainable agriculture and sobriety. "We believe that nothing is true and everything is permitted, so we created this film festival to show that. After all, if a group of 70 year olds who hate modern cinema can judge the Oscars and that be seen as something important, why can't three women named Becca be just as valid?"
Fellow founder Juan Sebastian Carcosa, the Oxford Fellow who famously sold his travel photography catalogue for $10,000,000 has another perspective. "We have seen that film festivals have broken off largely into two camps. There's the elitist group that you're not getting into. And there's the very questionable group that you can give your money to for a PNG file and not much else. Of course there's a third group of legitimate festivals that care about smaller creators, but when you look at the data on Film Freeway you see just how small of a fraction that is compared to, say, fifteen festivals with five award seasons each a year that somehow all run on the same day at the same location and don't seem to ever show any films. What we're asking is: why?"

Indeed, a secondary purpose of this festival is to examine the current film festival ecosystem by using itself as a case study.
