Port Wentworth Begins Full Enforcement of Downtown Semi-Truck Ban on Coastal Highway
EntSun News/11096167
Two-month outreach campaign concludes as restrictions take effect
PORT WENTWORTH, Ga. - EntSun -- Full enforcement of the semi-truck ban along the downtown corridor of Coastal Highway is in effect beginning July 1, 2026. Semi-truck traffic (excluding local deliveries) is prohibited from the downtown portion of Coastal Highway, marking the completion of a public information campaign that began in May to prepare residents, business owners, drivers, and regional partners for the change.
The enforcement milestone follows two months of outreach, signage installation, and a formal warning period in June for truck traffic that had not yet transitioned to designated alternate routes.
This effort supports the City's broader goal of improving public safety, reducing heavy truck congestion, and transforming downtown into a more walkable, business-friendly destination for residents and visitors.
Last year, the Georgia Department of Transportation approved Port Wentworth's request to assume local jurisdiction over the downtown portion of State Route 25 from Grange Road to Bonnybridge Road, a key step that allowed the City to redirect through-truck traffic away from the city center.

"Reaching full enforcement today reflects our commitment to improving safety and quality of life in our downtown," said City Manager Steve Davis. "We appreciate the patience and cooperation of drivers and businesses throughout this transition, and we look forward to continuing to build a more vibrant, pedestrian-focused downtown."
The City worked closely with the Georgia Ports Authority, Jasper County, South Carolina, Garden City, and regional transportation partners to strengthen route awareness and directional signage on key approaches to downtown ahead of today's enforcement date.
Residents, business owners, truck drivers, and logistics partners are encouraged to review official notices, follow posted signage, and stay informed through the City's website and official communication channels.
