Just days after performing in the virtual "Mardi Gras for All Ya'll with NBC's Hoda Kotb, John, Bel Edwards, the Governor of Louisiana, Chef Emeril Lagasse and others, Damon J. Batiste of NOLA's Royal Family of Music, shares a Louis Armstrong signed poster for February 27, 1949.
Seventy-two years to the date of a poster headlining New Orleans famous musician and native son as "King Zulu" at the Booker T. Washington Auditorium presented by the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club, Batiste, the founder of NOSACONN (New Orleans South Africa Connection), shared the unique find that was posted on Social Media February 27, 2021 as Black History Month ends.
The Armstrong signed poster was posted on Instagram as Maria Shriver of the U.S. political family, the Kennedys and former First Lady of California highlighted Louis Armstrong's "La Vie En Rose" (https://youtu.be/8IJzYAda1wA) to Shriver's "Amor Fati" post-- https://www.instagram.com/p/CLx4fbmH6sj/... Tweeted to @Wendell Pierce; @JonBatiste; @WyntonMarsalis; @AthonyMackie, who are connected to New Orleans, the poster with Armstrong's signature between his photograph and the title "Zulu King" hearkens to the call of Africa and its importance to the unique American creation of Jazz, Blues and Gospel. From Armstrong's rendition of the Black Spiritual "When the Saints Go Marching In" to his duet with Mahalia Jackson at the July 1970 Newport Jazz Festival singing "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," Armstrong sang and played the gamut of genres born in the USA.
"As Black History Month winds down, this poster is a reminder that Black History never ends," said Damon J. Batiste, Founder of NOSACONN, New Orleans South Africa Connection. "And as NOSACONN collaborates with The Rainbow Academy in Cape Town, KAYA FM in Joburg and our friends in Durban, South Africa and others in Africa, the music of Louis Armstrong and New Orleans travels full circle. The call from and to Africa is a call to New Orleans and a reawakening of tourism during this pandemic."
