Nation Building Needs Nation Builders: Construction Trades Report Provides Blueprint for Historic Federal Clean Energy Announcement

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - EntSun -- Ottawa's announcement of a historic $70 billion investment in clean energy is a preview of the 350,000 jobs on the horizon for Canada's building trades, according to a report from Jobs for Today.

The Government of Canada, alongside the governments of Newfoundland and Labrador and Québec, announced a historic agreement to upgrade and expand the Churchill Falls Generating Station, develop the Gull Island hydroelectricity project, and build a major new Labrador onshore wind project with the Innu of Labrador. The projects are expected to generate 14,000 megawatts of clean power, create 23,000 jobs, and contribute $31 billion to Canada's GDP through the early 2040s.

Jobs for Today: Canada's Building Trades and the Net-Zero Transition projects that investments to meet Canada's net-zero commitments by 2050 could generate between 6.3 million and 9.5 million job-years of construction work nationally, or up to 350,000 ongoing jobs. That represents a permanent 20-30% increase in Canada's total current construction employment.

"This project will create far more jobs for construction and trades workers, and have a longer impact on Canada's economy and environment, than any pipeline," said Jim Stanford, Economist and Director for the Centre of Future Work. "It is concrete proof that accelerating renewable energy will usher in an employment boom unlike any we have experienced before."

"This is what nation-building looks like. Canada cannot achieve energy security, economic resilience or its climate objectives without building substantially more clean electricity and the infrastructure required to move that electricity," said Lee Loftus of Climate Industry Research Team (CIRT). "But we also need to recognize that $70 billion in infrastructure cannot be built without workers. Canada must match its investment in infrastructure with an equally serious investment in skilled trades training, apprenticeships, recruitment and retention."

The report's authors say the federal government's own numbers underscore the urgency: a single agreement is projected to support 23,000 jobs and add $31 billion to GDP. Undertaking the nation building projects required to meet Canada's National Electricity Strategy, which aims to double the capacity of the grid by 2050, will require the skilled trades workforce identified in Jobs for Today: Canada's Building Trades and the Net-Zero Transition.
