Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine's Homeland Cultural Center Presents Dance Fest at Cesar Chavez Park Amphitheater on Aug. 15

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The annual Dance Fest, a free community event showcasing cultural classes in music, dance, and the arts, is set to return for its 17th year on Saturday, August 15. Presented by the City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine's (PRM) Homeland Cultural Center, Dance Fest will feature 10 diverse and engaging performances from local community members. The event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at Cesar E. Chavez Park Amphitheater.

According to Mayor Rex Richardson, "Culture and the arts are the fabric of our community, and Dance Fest is a powerful reminder of how the arts bring people together, celebrate our shared cultures and strengthen community connections."

Open to all ages, Dance Fest encourages attendees to bring blankets, chairs, and picnic-style dinners to enjoy while watching a variety of performances. These performances will include Popping and Locking, Breakdance, Drumming, Poetry, Aztec Dance, Khmer Martial Arts and Dance, West African Dance, Hmong Arts and Micronesian Arts. All of these classes are offered year-round at Homeland Cultural Center located at MacArthur Park.

Councilwoman Mary Zendejas of the First District also expressed her excitement for the event stating that "Dance Fest reflects the creativity and cultural richness that makes Long Beach such a special community." She added that this event is one that locals look forward to each year as it showcases local talent and brings people together through celebrating culture.

Homeland Cultural Center has received numerous accolades for its outstanding programming in arts and humanities within parks and recreation agencies. In 2008 they were awarded the Dorothy Mullen Arts & Humanities Award from the National Recreation and Park Association, and in 2012 they received the Award of Excellence from the California Park and Recreation Society for their creativity, innovation, and community impact.
