Long Beach: Community Invited to Learn More About Improvement Projects Coming to Houghton Park
EntSun News/11100950
Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach is making significant improvements to Houghton Park and is inviting community members to attend a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2026 to learn more about the four planned projects.
The Department of Public Works and Parks, Recreation and Marine are working together to enhance community facilities, recreation amenities, and gathering spaces at Houghton Park over the next year. The meeting will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Houghton Park Community Center located at 6301 Myrtle Ave.
Community members will have the opportunity to review proposed improvements, ask questions, and hear about upcoming construction activities for the following projects:
Houghton Park Community Center Improvements
The first project on the agenda is the Houghton Park Community Center Improvements. Construction for this project is set to begin in fall 2026 and will involve replacing the aging roof system with a new one that comes with a long-term warranty. This improvement is made possible by Measure A funding and will ensure the continued reliability and availability of this important community facility.
Houghton Park Playground Project
Attendees will also receive an update on the Houghton Park Playground project which is expected to begin construction later this year. The City Council approved a construction contract for this project on Aug. 18, marking an important step towards its completion. Funded by Measure A, Park Impact Fees, Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District Annual Allocation Grant Program, as well as an earmark from California State Parks Office of Grants and Local Services, this project has been shaped by ongoing community engagement.

The playground designs were first shared with the community in October 2023 and were updated in June 2024 based on feedback received during initial outreach efforts. The new playground will feature modern play equipment suitable for children of all ages and abilities including ADA-accessible features such as pathways and surfacing. It will also include sensory, physical, and imaginative play opportunities at a custom stage inspired by the park's rich musical history. Additionally, there will be new trees for shade, enhanced landscaping, rubberized safety surfacing, lighting, benches, and a drinking fountain.
Houghton Park Parking Lot and Gathering Area Improvements
The Houghton Park Parking Lot and Gathering Area Improvements project will also be discussed at the meeting. This project aims to enhance the park's gathering spaces to create a more welcoming, accessible, and functional environment for the community. The planned improvements include parking lot rehabilitation, improved pedestrian access, a redesigned gathering area with new seating and a shade structure, upgraded site furnishings and landscaping, as well as additional trees for shade. Construction for this project is expected to begin in fall 2026 with improvements to the gathering area potentially starting as early as spring 2027 based on community feedback.

Houghton Park Bike Mobility Hub
Lastly, attendees will learn about the Houghton Park Bike Mobility Hub which is being funded by a community grant provided by the Port of Long Beach. This project involves restoring the space under the baseball bleachers to create a bike mobility hub. The scope of work includes flooring restoration, wall repairs, painting, and accessibility improvements to the employee restroom.
These projects represent a significant investment in Houghton Park that will expand recreational opportunities and create more welcoming spaces for residents to gather and enjoy the park. They are part of the Elevate '28 Infrastructure Investment Plan which has over $1 billion in funding for nearly 200 projects aimed at revitalizing parks and community facilities while enhancing accessibility and multimodal transportation throughout Long Beach.
