Idaho Falls: Contractor work to detour traffic at intersection of Holmes and 49th South
EntSun News/11097838
~ Idaho Falls - The intersection of Holmes and 49th South will undergo major changes starting on Wednesday, July 22 as contractors begin work to install traffic lights. This project, jointly funded by Bonneville County and the City of Idaho Falls, aims to increase safety for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Currently, the intersection is an all-way stop. However, with the recent development in the area, there has been a significant increase in traffic. In fact, between 2018 and 2023, there were a total of 17 reported crashes within just 300 feet of the intersection. One of these crashes resulted in multiple fatalities.
To address these safety concerns, federal funds have been secured and both Bonneville County and the City of Idaho Falls are investing in improving the intersection. The new design will include designated left turn lanes, ADA compliant pedestrian ramps, and sidewalks.

During construction, the intersection will be closed and detours should be expected. The project is estimated to run through the end of September, depending on weather conditions and field conditions. Drivers are advised to watch out for crews and equipment, follow all posted traffic control signs, and reduce their speed in the work zone to ensure safety for both workers and travelers.
Once completed, the City of Idaho Falls will take over management of the intersection. While Bonneville County is leading this project, the city is also assisting in sharing information about upcoming traffic impacts. For more details about this project or any concerns related to it, interested parties can contact Suncore Construction and Materials Inc. at (208) 458-4000.
This improvement project at Holmes and 49th South intersection is a crucial step towards ensuring safer roads for everyone in Idaho Falls. The city urges all drivers to be patient during construction and follow all necessary precautions for their own safety as well as that of others on the road.
