GBAMFS Publishes Founder Essay Examining Four Decades of American Labor Policy

EntSun News/11104382
Reflecting on current public framing of Gamers as layabouts, our founder deep-dives into the real issues affecting the American labor market

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - EntSun -- WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Gamer Advocate and technology professional Jeff Odgis, founder, better known as Jdawg, has published American Labor in Perspective: The Last 40 or So Years, a historical and political-economic examination of the changing position of American workers over approximately four decades.

The paper follows a recurring question through successive presidential administrations, trade agreements, immigration debates and transformations of the American economy:

Who gets the work, where is the work performed, and whose interests does American economic policy principally protect? Rather than treating immigration, outsourcing, guest-worker programs, deindustrialization and wage competition as entirely separate political subjects, American Labor in Perspective examines the points at which they have repeatedly converged in American labor politics.

Its central argument is straightforward: Americans have repeatedly demanded more employment, better-paying employment, greater retention of productive work inside the United States, and policies intended to protect the bargaining position of American workers. The political expression of that demand has varied considerably across time and party. The underlying labor concern has proved considerably more durable.

The paper examines the simultaneous development of 2 major mechanisms affecting American labor: outsourcing work to foreign labor markets and bringing additional labor into the United States. The expansion of guest-worker programs into those occupations raised a corresponding question: what happens when the proposed replacement jobs themselves become subject to intensified labor competition?

That question has acquired renewed relevance.

Long-term aggregate economic growth and the immediate experience of individual workers are not the same measurement. An economy can expand while particular workers lose bargaining power. International trade can reduce prices while imposing severe costs on particular communities. Immigration can increase national output while increasing labor competition for particular groups. A profession can retain favorable long-term growth prospects while its current entrants experience a severe hiring contraction.

"For the individual worker, the national aggregate does not pay the mortgage," the paper states.
