R-ECO: Is Zero Plastic Waste the Only Way Forward?

Last year, almost 90 percent of Canadians supported stronger plastics regulations, with 70 percent favouring a ban on single-use plastics. Amid a rallying environmental cry to reduce packaging, some experts say that wrapping certain foods in plastics or putting them in containers can actually reduce waste in the long run. It's not packaging per se that is bad; it is how the packaging system operates and how there's a lack of incentive for both industry and consumers to optimize packaging use and management. Experts say grocers could set a standard size or weight for reusable containers that customers could bring and fill themselves for foods requiring some boxes.
