Cryolab Publishes Guidance on Liquid Nitrogen Supply Arrangements for Laboratories

CHICHESTER, U.K. - EntSun -- Cryolab, a specialist supplier of cryogenic equipment, consumables and servicing to the healthcare, fertility and research sectors, has published new guidance on liquid nitrogen supply arrangements for laboratories.

The guidance addresses a pattern the company sees regularly on customer sites: supply arrangements that were configured when a facility's first vessel was installed and never revisited as the sample store grew.

It sets out the three supply modes available to laboratories. Bulk delivery, which fills a static tank on site from a tanker, offers the lowest unit cost and the least handling but requires a permanent external installation, vehicle access, a concrete base, appropriate separation distances and a supply agreement that usually runs for several years. Cylinder and portable vessel delivery, where pressurised vessels are supplied on exchange, carries a higher unit cost but needs no fixed installation and can be scaled by changing the order. Self collect, where a laboratory fills its own dewar at a depot, offers the lowest apparent unit cost, which the guidance notes is largely offset once staff time, vehicle arrangements and the transport risk assessment are accounted for.

The guidance also addresses a common forecasting error. A cryogenic vessel loses nitrogen continuously whether it is opened or not, and that standing loss frequently dominates the losses caused by sample handling. Laboratories are advised to base their requirement on their own measured weekly consumption and their vessels' evaporation rates rather than on the number of samples processed.

Cryolab further recommends that laboratories log nitrogen consumption per vessel rather than per site, since a rising consumption trend at unchanged workload is the earliest practical indication that a vessel's vacuum is degrading, typically appearing months before frost becomes visible on the outer shell.
