Cryolab Guidance Explains Why Cryogenic Vessel Quotations at Identical Capacity Are Not Comparable

EntSun News/11102741
Article sets out the specification, compliance and running cost factors that account for price differences between liquid nitrogen storage vessels.

LONDON - EntSun -- Cryolab Ltd has published guidance for laboratory and procurement professionals comparing liquid nitrogen storage vessel quotations, addressing a recurring difficulty in cryogenic purchasing: two vessels quoted at the same capacity frequently differ substantially in price, and capacity is the specification least relevant to that difference.

The guidance identifies static evaporation rate as the principal determinant of cost of ownership, noting that a cryogenic vessel consumes liquid nitrogen continuously regardless of use and that, over a ten year period, the difference between a good and a poor evaporation rate routinely exceeds the purchase price difference between the vessels being compared. The article recommends that laboratories request both the static evaporation rate and its implied weekly nitrogen order in writing.

A substantial portion of legitimate price difference, the guidance states, lies in the construction of the vacuum insulation: the number of layers of multilayer insulation, the outgassing behaviour of internal materials, and getter capacity, the chemically active component that maintains the evacuated annulus and determines how long a vessel holds its performance. None of these factors is verifiable on delivery.

On compliance, the article notes that BCGA Code of Practice 36 requires at least two independent safety devices on the inner vessel of a pressurised tank, typically a pressure relief valve and a separate bursting disc, with the outer jacket relief device set to open at not more than 0.5 bar. Where a vessel operates above 0.5 bar above atmospheric pressure, the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 require a written scheme of examination drawn up by a competent person, with HSE guidance INDG178 setting out its scope.

The guidance also addresses monitoring, citing ESHRE recommendations on good practice in the IVF laboratory published in Human Reproduction (41(8), 1245), which expect cryostorage tanks to be continuously monitored with alarms detecting and logging out of range temperature or LN2 level.

The article deliberately publishes no price figures, on the basis that cryogenic vessel pricing depends on specification, configuration, monitoring, delivery and prevailing supply conditions, and that an indicative figure which proves inaccurate is worse than no figure at all.

Cryolab was established in 2000 and holds ISO 9001:2015 BSI Quality Management System certification, supplying cryogenic equipment, consumables, accessories and servicing to hospitals, IVF clinics and research facilities in the United Kingdom and internationally.
