Cryolab Guidance Examines the Storage Estate Implications of the UK 55 Year Cryopreservation Limit
EntSun News/11102187
LONDON - EntSun -- Cryolab, a specialist supplier of cryogenic equipment, consumables, accessories and servicing to the healthcare, fertility and research sectors, has published guidance examining the operational consequences of the UK storage limit for eggs, sperm and embryos, which increased from ten years to 55 years on 1 July 2022, subject to reconsent every ten years.
The article observes that while consent documentation across the sector was updated promptly following the change, storage estates were in most cases left unaltered, and that a vessel specified against a ten year horizon is now expected to hold samples for a period exceeding the working career of most laboratory staff.
Three consequences are set out. First, capacity planning changes from a rolling problem to a cumulative one. Under the previous limit storage largely self cleared, whereas under the current limit samples leave as a trickle and inventory accumulates, meaning models carried over from before 2022 systematically underestimate future requirements.

Second, vessel service life becomes a live consideration. The article notes that a vacuum insulated vessel does not last 55 years, because the getter maintaining the annulus vacuum has a finite capacity, and that on saturation thermal performance declines without any visible fault occurring. Samples will therefore outlive several generations of vessel, making transfer between vessels a planned, repeated and documented operation rather than an exceptional event.
The guidance also addresses a point it describes as commonly misunderstood: that the principal risk band is not ambient temperature but the region between approximately minus 130 and minus 80 degrees Celsius, where molecular motion has resumed while the sample still appears frozen, and where ice recrystallisation is both cumulative and invisible.
On technique, the article notes that vitrification has largely displaced slow controlled rate freezing for oocytes and embryos in routine practice, but argues that it relocated risk rather than removing it, shifting dependence from equipment to operator with critical intervals measured in seconds. It notes that controlled rate freezers remain the method of choice where sample volume makes vitrification impractical.
