Colorado Springs: Deceased persons identified from two-vehicle crash on Marksheffel Road south of East Gate Street

~ On August 31, 2026, a tragic two-vehicle crash occurred on Marksheffel Road in Colorado Springs. The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) received a call at approximately 1:36 p.m. reporting the incident, which took place south of East Gate Street.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers and medical personnel discovered a collision between two sedans with multiple injured parties. According to preliminary investigations, a Toyota sedan traveling southbound on Marksheffel Road failed to navigate a slight curve and veered into the northbound lane. The Toyota then collided with a northbound Chevrolet sedan.
The occupants of the Chevrolet were immediately transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Tragically, the two occupants of the Toyota were pronounced dead at the scene. Due to the severity of the crash, CSPD's Major Crash Team (MCT) was called in to take over the investigation.

Two days later, on September 2, 2026, CSPD received notification from the El Paso County Coroner's Office regarding the identification of the deceased occupants of the Toyota. The driver was identified as 53-year-old Francine Shumake and her passenger as 61-year-old Brenda Baker.
This devastating incident marks the 42nd and 43rd traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs this year alone. In comparison, by this time last year, there had been only 39 traffic fatalities in the city. Over the past year, there have been a total of 57 traffic-related deaths within Colorado Springs.
The investigation into this tragic crash is ongoing and remains open. CSPD is urging anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident to come forward and contact them at (719) 444-7000. For those who wish to remain anonymous, they can call Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (719) 634-STOP (7867) or toll-free at 1-800-222-8477.
