Colorado Partners with Code for America to Simplify Tax Filing for Eligible Families
EntSun News/11096964
DENVER ~ In a recent announcement, Governor Jared Polis of Colorado revealed a new partnership with Code for America to provide low-income Coloradans with access to the free SimpleFile tool. This tool will be available to those who qualify for the Colorado Child Tax Credit or Family Affordability Tax Credit for tax year 2025 and have not yet filed their taxes.
SimpleFile is a simplified tax filing tool that aims to help eligible families claim valuable state tax credits. It will be available in early July and can be accessed through a mobile-friendly platform. The tool is designed to make the tax filing process easier and faster, taking only about 15 minutes to complete. It also eliminates the need for income documents, making it more accessible for those who may not typically file taxes.
Governor Polis stated, "Filing taxes shouldn't be hard. Colorado is making it easier for eligible families to claim tax credits they qualify for, putting more money back into people's pockets to help pay for groceries, child care, housing, and other everyday expenses." This partnership with Code for America reflects the state's commitment to simplifying tax filing and ensuring that eligible families receive the credits they are entitled to.

This initiative builds upon Colorado's previous efforts in 2024 when Governor Polis signed HB24-1288, which created a pilot program to explore innovative ways of helping eligible Coloradans identify and claim unclaimed tax credits while reducing barriers to filing. The partnership with Code for America aligns with the state's goal of making government services more efficient and saving people time and money.
SimpleFile is specifically designed for eligible Coloradans who have not yet filed their 2025 state income tax return and may not typically file taxes due to low or no income. Unlike traditional tax returns, this tool only requires essential information needed to determine eligibility for available state tax credits. It is also available in both English and Spanish and can be completed on a mobile phone or desktop.
Code for America CEO Amanda Renteria expressed her support for this partnership, stating, "SimpleFile shows what's possible when government services are designed around the people they're meant to serve." She also highlighted the importance of making these benefits easily accessible for eligible families.

The SimpleFile tool will be available for eligible Coloradans filing Tax Year 2025 returns until October 15, 2026. To qualify, individuals must be full-year Colorado residents with at least one dependent under the age of 17 and have earned less than $15,000 ($26,000 for married couples filing jointly). As the Family Affordability Tax Credit is not expected to be available next year based on current state revenue projections, eligible families are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity while it is still available.
To learn more about SimpleFile and see if they qualify, eligible Coloradans can visit https://simplefile.getyourrefund.org/. Code For America will also be hosting a virtual webinar on July 16th from 1-2pm MT for community-based organizations and government agencies interested in learning more about the tool and how they can spread awareness to their communities.
