Colorado: Governor Polis Tours Disaster Assistance Center, Thanks Volunteers, Highlights Resources for Coloradans Impacted by Wildfires

PUEBLO, Colo. ~ PUEBLO, Colo. - Governor Jared Polis recently visited the Pueblo Disaster Assistance Center (DAC) to meet with Coloradans affected by the Aspen Acres Fire and the volunteers who have stepped up to help. The DAC, which opened on July 2, was set up in partnership with the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, Pueblo County, Custer County, and the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
During his visit, Governor Polis expressed his gratitude for the volunteers and staff at the DAC who have been working tirelessly to support those impacted by the wildfires. He also urged anyone affected by the fires to seek help as soon as possible, emphasizing that there are numerous resources available to assist them in rebuilding their lives.
The DAC is located at the Pueblo Academy of Arts and offers centralized assistance for families affected by natural disasters. Partner organizations are providing a range of services including replacing lost documents, connecting individuals with benefits and resources, providing housing referrals, and offering emotional support.

The center is a collaboration between various public, private, and nonprofit organizations such as Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies - Division of Insurance, Colorado Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), Custer County, Pueblo County (Department of Public Health and Environment, Department of Human Services, Sheriff's Office - A Community Organization for Victim Assistance (ACOVA), Assessor's Office, Veteran Services and County Clerk & Recorder), 211 Colorado, Senior Resource Development Agency (SRDA), United Policyholders, American Red Cross, Health Solutions,Catholic Charities of Southern Colorado,the Salvation Army,H.O.P.E Animal Crisis Response,and many more.
Currently,the DAC is in need of cleaning supplies and pet food donations which can be dropped off at the main entrance. However,it is important for individuals in areas affected by wildfires to follow orders from local authorities first and foremost. The latest information can be found at DHSEM.Colorado.gov. It is also recommended for people to prepare a go kit with essential items in case of evacuation.

The United Way of Southern Colorado is also offering emergency resources and accepting financial donations through their Wildfire Relief Fund. Additionally, AirBnB is working with Mile High United Way to provide free emergency housing for those displaced by the Aspen Acres, Ferris, Gold Mountain, Willow, Sharpe, Poitrey Canyon, Snyder, Green Ridge and Big Sheep Fires. The American Red Cross is also offering assistance to individuals who have been forced to evacuate their homes or have had their access to essential services disrupted.
