Colorado: Governor Polis Memorializes Verbal Disaster Declaration for The Post, Sheep Pen, High Fence, and Gotera Fires in Las Animas County

DENVER ~ In a recent development, Governor Polis of Colorado has issued an Executive Order to officially document the verbal disaster declaration made by Lt. Governor on August 13, 2026. This declaration was in response to the Post, Sheep Pen, High Fence, and Gotera Fires that have been raging in Las Animas County.

The Executive Order serves to activate the State Emergency Operations Plan and entrusts the Department of Public Safety and its Divisions of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) and Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) with the responsibility of managing all aspects of response, recovery, and mitigation efforts for these fires. Additionally, it also calls upon the assistance of the Colorado National Guard in an unarmed capacity to aid with evacuations and mitigation efforts.

Furthermore, the Executive Order temporarily suspends certain statutes and regulations of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) to allow for more flexibility for emergency medical service providers under the guidance of the Colorado Department of Public Safety (CDPS).

According to reports as of August 17, 2026, the Sheep Pen, High Fence, and Gotera Fires had collectively burned 858 acres in Las Animas County and were fully contained. However, as of September 8th, the Post Fire had burned a total of 4,335 acres but was reported to be 90% contained.

The Governor's swift action through this Executive Order highlights his commitment towards ensuring effective management and containment of these devastating fires. The state continues to work tirelessly towards full recovery from this natural disaster.
